Sea Hunter
We’ve just returned from another exciting Cocos Island expedition! This dolphin encounter (video above) was music to our ears.
Day one was a bit quiet, but we managed to see Galapagos sharks, frogfish, and yellowfin tunas. Day two started off with a bang! We encountered mantas on several dives – but during the last dive of the day at Punta Maria, one of them stayed with us for over 20 minutes.
At Small Dos Amigos, the second cleaning station was the most active this week, and there we observed many hammerheads and at least 6 Galapagos sharks buzzing around at the same time. A giant manta came to say hello towards the end!
Dirty Rock provided some great action, although the visibility wasn’t always the best. A big, curious manta ray played with us at the pinnacle for 10 to 15 minutes!
Alcyone was also phenomenal – on one of our favorite dives there, we spotted yellowfin tunas and bluefin trevally, followed by Galapagos sharks and hammerheads coming in to be cleaned. The grand finale was when an immense school of hammerheads appeared as we drifted out into the blue! At Alcyone, we saw some of the largest schools of hammerheads overall this week. On another dive there, a hammerhead with a hook in its dorsal fin kept coming in close, seemingly asking for help, but we were unable to get close enough to remove it.
At Manuelita Channel, we saw a hawksbill turtle and a silvertip; and at Pan de Azucar, we encountered many more silvertips!
I have been to so many places like Socorroc or Cabo San Luca but this dive trip was so magical. It’s undiscrible. We had hammerheads all over. We had close encounter with hammerheads and mantas. It was insane. I would recommend everyone to book a tip with sea hunter and enjoy the wild life of Costa Rica and cocos. I was crying under water as I saw things I never espected to see. Thanks to the crew and everyone making that possible.
Loved the busy cleaning stations, school of hammerheads, playing with mantas and dolphins. Dirty Rock was the best for me. Diego and Luis were fantastic Divemasters. They paid attention to the surroundings and the group and found lots of sharks for us to see. Even in currents and rough conditions they made me feel safe. Diego in particular was very kind and helped navigate a dive that was giving me a hard time and turned a bad experience into a good one. Luis was very lucky and guided us right to a school of hammers and then dolphins. I loved seeing their smiling faces every day. Diego Rápido also made sure to get us to every dive site in 5 minutes or less 🙂 And don’t forget Manta Roy for the win with the giant manta that befriended us.
The ship is very nice with lots of places to relax, in particular the sundeck. The food was amazing the whole trip and somehow even the fruit stayed fresh for 10 days. Manuel and Chico were really excellent cooks and I enjoyed the food and the variety.
I did not dive with Ian but he was also very helpful during the trip, extremely welcoming, and quick to laugh with a positive attitude. I enjoyed his company and conversation. Carew was also great. He was so helpful the whole trip and always had a big smile on his face. I enjoyed talking with him a bit and he is very positive/ The rest of the crew working a bit more behind the scenes helped make everything run smoothly and were also pleasant and helpful.
Diving with Diego with the dolphins was one of the best dives of my life. Diego was so great helping us watch the sharks off the back of the boat and talking with us about his diving experiences. “Diego Rápido” also got us to all the dives sites in half the time of anyone else! Diego took great care of everyone under the water and on the boat. I would follow Diego to anywhere he’s taking people as a dive master.
Luis was a fantastic dive master. He made me feel safe and informed on all our dives and always pointed out the animals underwater that we would’ve missed without him. I would follow Luis anywhere he’s a dive master.
Ian was a great addition to the yellow team for a few days while he was driving the skiff. He was very engaging while socializing on the ship, and he was super helpful with watching the sharks off the back of the boat.
“Manta Roy” brought so much enthusiasm and “positive vibrations” to the dive deck every day, and he led us on two incredible dives where we swam with mantas.
Emanuel and Chico kept us so well fed with their incredibly tasty and diverse meals. I will be sad to go home to my own cooking after the luxury of their cooking the last 10 days.Rafa was so friendly and engaging even though I wasn’t on his dive boat. He always smiled and said hello when we passed on the dive deck.
Carew made me feel so welcome and at home on the boat. He always had a smile to share and a friendly greeting at the start and end of every meal.
The Captain did a terrific job keeping everyone safe and changing schedules for the best diving.
It’s not a surprise that Roberto’s job title is “cruise director.” He juggled 15 different tasks all the time and made it look effortless. He kept us on schedule for our dives and meals and also did a fantastic job establishing expectations early on in the trip so we knew what to expect in a predictable schedule every day. Roberto is the “heart” of this Sea Hunter experience, and I can’t imagine doing this trip without him. Whatever you’re paying him should be more than what it is. All the people I will share my great experience with will know Roberto was the conductor of the ship’s orchestra.
Sharks love deep water so I enjoyed the deep dives the most. We saw lots of sharks oftentimes one after the other after the other. We saw big schools of hammerheads and several mantas that stayed with us for a long time. Some schools of fish and an octopus. Luis was a fabulous dive guide with a great attitude, with Diego the dives were a bit more adventerous. Both Luis and Diego were searching a lot for schools and mantas and were succesful. Manta Roy also dived with us and brought his positive vibrations. Ian was a great skipper on the days he had some boat lessons.
We have had an amazing trip with Roberto as our DM. Even though the visibility was disappointing, Roberto seemed to have x-ray vision & could always find something of interest to see. He & Ian made a great team & we felt incredibly safe in the water with them. Best dive site for us was Alcyone but I think we saw at least one hammerhead on every dive. Thoroughly enjoyed the majestic manta ray and the frog fish but nothing beats sitting at a viewing station having a hammerhead swim just a few feet above you. A bucket list item ticked off – thank you. Great boat, really well appointed. Food has been amazing with superb choice every meal time. Portions are HUGE & Carew really looks after you. Rafa was a skillful skiff driver in what were often rough seas. He often brought us home via a beautiful waterfall, cave or interesting wildlife.
