Sea Hunter
Cocos Island has been one of those dream destinations -remote, mysterious and full of life. This liveaboard trip turned that lifelong dream into something even more magic than I ever imagined.
From the moment we set sail there was the shared sense of adventure and anticipation on board. By the time we reach Coco Island, the underwater world left speechless: massive schools of hammerheads, Galapagos, silver tips, black tips in large shimmering walls of jacks that seem to go on forever. Every dive felt alive – raw, powerful and humbling-, the kind of diving that reminds why you fell in love with the ocean in the first place.
But Coco isn’t just magic underwater. Stepping onto the island itself felt like entering another world: lush green jungles, misty cloud forest and endless waterfalls cascading down volcanic cliffs. Visiting the Ranger station, interact with them and hiking along the island, gave us a completely glimpse of this untouched paradise from a completely different angle wild, vibrant and alive in every sense.
And there was the crew -truly the heart of the experience, their professionalism, warmth, and passion created an atmosphere of safety, friendship and pure joy. They went above and beyond, cheering us on through strong currents, sharing their knowledge and always making sure everyone felt at home between the dives. We laugh, shared stories and enjoy amazing meals surrounded by nothing but sea & sky in this gorgeous island. It didn’t feel like a trip anymore. It felt like a shared journey among friends who love the oceans and pristine nature.
Leaving Coco’s was hard but overall it was a fulfillment of a life long dream sparked years ago by Jacques Cousteau TV show.
Coco’s: where waterfalls meet the sea and every dive feels like a discovery
Marco Venegas, Sea Hunter passenger
We just had to start this trip report off with Marco’s glowing firsthand testimonial!
The week began with an excellent check dive at Manuelita Coral Garden, where upon descent hammerheads were already being cleaned on the reef. Two large oceanic blacktips, several spotted eagle rays, and abundant reef fish accompanied the group throughout the dive. Multiple schools of hammerheads crossed over the sandy bottom, setting a strong start to the expedition.
Conditions remained favorable during the following days. Manuelita continued to deliver outstanding activity with hammerheads circling the cleaning stations in clear water. A medium oceanic blacktip and a massive Galapagos shark made close passes, while a giant manta glided by as divers moved into the blue. The action at the reef edge and sandy bottom kept spirits high.
Dirty Rock delivered big time – hammerheads filled the area in every direction, including a massive school that streamed past continuously throughout the dive. Several Galapagos sharks and robust oceanic blacktips joined the show, and more hammerheads appeared out in the blue. Later dives revealed equally impressive activity along the island side, with dozens of sharks moving together in synchronized formations. When the current allowed, the pinnacle was surrounded by dense schools of jacks, and hammerheads passed so close that divers could see every detail.
Currents and surge varied throughout the week, sometimes creating challenging conditions but never diminishing the excitement. Even during lower visibility, the group enjoyed sightings of mobula rays, tunas, eagle rays, and the occasional tiger shark. Oceanic blacktips and Galapagos sharks were frequently observed, along with dolphins, jacks, and leather bass hunting across the reef.
Alcyone lived up to its reputation, with strong currents and extraordinary shark encounters. Hammerheads formed thick clouds rising from the bottom to midwater, often mixed with Galapagos and blacktips. On calmer dives, a tiger shark appeared briefly, and several Galapagos sharks patrolled near the stations. Dos Amigos Pequeño also delivered excellent action, with Galapagos and hammerheads sharing the stations and large schools of jacks swirling around the pinnacle.
Porites offered two of the most memorable dives of the expedition. More than fifteen silvertip sharks, mostly females, circled close to the divers in perfect visibility. Two huge female Galapagos sharks cruised through, followed by a majestic manta ray gliding above the silvertips. On a later dive, silvertips of all sizes—from juveniles to large adults—filled the site alongside the same old oceanic blacktip seen earlier in the week. A small school of hammerheads and a medium silvertip at the safety stop rounded out a world-class dive.
Between the first and second cleaning stations at Manuela, hammerheads passed repeatedly, culminating in a massive school of over a hundred individuals moving through the blue. Oceanic blacktips and Galapagos sharks added to the spectacle, while jacks and reef fish provided constant activity across the reef.
The expedition concluded at Manuelita, which was alive with hammerheads, Galapagos, and blacktips passing in constant motion. A final school of hammerheads appeared just before ascent, providing a perfect ending to a truly exceptional week of diving at Cocos Island.
The top 3 of the dive spots this trip were Dirty Rock, Porites and Manuelita Outside. Finally, I could see the walls of hammerheads in the second cleaning station at Dirty Rock, taking advantage that the current was changed as the usual direction. The famous school of jacks was insane, with all the divers playing into the mountain of fish. Porites gave us an opportunity to have the most extraordinary interaction with Silvertips (in all sizes, since the baby to the “the big mamas) and huge Galapagos passing close.
Manuelita Outside was always full of activity the whole trip, specially the third cleaning station that gave us many encounters not only in the cleaning station but in the blue with schools of hammerheads passing through and in front of us. I can’t forget my lovely Small dos amigos where we had pristine visibility and full action with Galapagos and Hammerheads. We had the opportunity to experience not only the magnificent underwater, but the island this time on land, going to three different waterfalls and going to the lookout of Wafer’s bay. We’re a group of 5 Ticos, we came here to celebrate the 40th birthday of my brother Diego in our gem la Isla del Coco. We’re blessed to have the opportunity to live the island in all ways as possible. Finally all my credits to Juan Manuel and Roberto, they are the perfect guide couple underwater, looking always and finding the best of all the spots. The food as always was delicious and the staff pretty professional and friendly. “Burro tours” was excellent allowing us to enjoy and admire each corner and details of the island in every boat trip to the dive spots.
This has been the most completed experience as a diver, explorer and nature lover I ever had.
My favorite dives were in Dirty Rock, Small Dos Amigos, Manuelita Out and Purites. I had total of 20 dives which only two was not good enough but they still categorized as good dives. The rest 17 dives were awesome! I have no words to describe how amazing they were.
Dirty Rock rocks!!! What a dive spot, it becomes my favorite ever, and the school of hammerheads we saw there was something out of explanation, my head really explotes. Same to Manuelita Out and Small Dos Amigos we spent the whole dive with Hammerheads, Galapagos, Black tips, white tips, jacks, yellow fin tuna, and many more of marine life. The Purites site, was very special because we have a good connection we the area the sharks were interacting between them and then with us. Thanks to Roberto who discover and showed us this amazing dive spot. Also thanks to Juan Manuel who guided us through the huge school of jacks they made a fantastic job together, and special thanks as well to Gilberto, Burrito, he was very patient and very kind with the group always with good and positive attitude even when the swelling was terrible.
Food was delicious, Chico, Manuel and Pollito very collaborative always in action, dive masters the best ever had, Robert and Juan Manuel, they made and amazing job underwater! Gilberto as I shared before he was great! Carlos “Macguibert he was always fixing something, Capitán Raul, always very committed and responsible with his leadership and his labor. This Crew for me has 10 of 10. They are amazing! I am proud as Costarrican share with such a hardworking people from my country this amazing journey.
Cocos is at its essence wild, remote, serene and stunning. The diversity of marine life was incredible with hammerheads in the hundreds, Galapagos in the dozens, silkies, silvertips, black tips being more than abundant. Also, the mantas, dolphins and marble rays were seen regularly. Swimming in a bait ball and having a blacktop explode through it was a surreal experience. The trip is not for the faint of heart but the experience is incredibly worthwhile. The staff and crew were outstanding. The boat is comfortable and very well maintained. Food was varied, prepared well and delicious. Dive masters were good and did their best to provide quality dives. The dive masters expect divers to be experienced and manage their dives. Do not do a couple of resort dives and think you are ready for this trip. This is hard diving but the effort is rewarded with the wildlife. Really a wonderful trip.

Overa the trip exceeded my expectations with crests. My favorite sites were porites and dirty rock. The interaction in porites is unique, you can see silver tip, black tip and Galapagos. In general the hammers heads, they are majestic and dirty rock is the point. My overall experience was phenomenal, from the moment you arrive on board you are welcomed as at home, with affection and attentive to details, are outstanding one. The exquisite, varied and good quality food. The whole team works as one just like a Swiss wactch. From the bottom of my heart infinite thanks!!
